Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a long-established, safe and effective system of healthcare relied upon by millions of people in
China and other Eastern countries. Acupuncture forms a part of TCM. Acupuncture as practiced by members of the British Acupuncture
Council is a holistic approach to health based on over 2000 years of developments and refinements in the Far East.
According to traditional Chinese philosophy our health is dependent on the body's vital energy (Qi) moving in a smooth and balanced
way through a series of meridians (channels) beneath the skin. When Qi becomes too weak, too strong or blocked, illness may occur.
By inserting fine needles into specific locations on the body an acupuncturist can stimulate the body's own healing response and
help restore its natural balance. The principal aim of acupuncture is to improve the overall well being of the patient, rather
than just alleviating isolated specific symptoms. By recovering the equilibrium between the physical, emotional and spiritual
aspects of the individual, good health and wellbeing can be restored and maintained.
