In May Jo will be traveling to the West Bank with World Medicine
In May 2008 Jo will be joining a group of acupuncturists traveling to the West Bank to provide healthcare to the Palestinians living in that area. The basic human rights of Palestinians to healthcare have been seriously compromised by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The project is being organized by two UK charities, World Medicine and Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) and. Acupuncture has so much to offer people affected by conflict in the Middle East, not just by treating their physical problems but also helping to ease the psychological trauma they are experiencing.
World Medicine are a group of acupuncturists and complementary therapists whose mission is to offer treatment to people suffering as a consequence of disasters, natural or manmade and inevitably in both scenarios, the effects of poverty. They set up free treatment clinics for those in need and have previously worked in Sri Lanka after the Tsunami and last year in India. Their projects have been enormously successful with dramatic effects in terms of treatment and simple health education. For example, a teaching clinic was established In Sri Lanka where monks have been taught to use ear acupuncture in a safe and effective way to continue treatments.
The May trip to Nablus and an outlying village forms a pilot project of possible ongoing collaboration between MAP and World Medicine. The team will be working primarily with mothers and children with psychosocial problems, and a union of health committees involved in primary health care. We hope to work with traditional or local healers who use herbs, massage and body alignment so the potential for mutual learning will be enormous and hugely valuable.
The ongoing violence, poverty and deterioration of infrastructure in the Middle East have meant both acute and chronic diseases are increasing. Cardiovascular disease, mental health problems and acute waterbourne diseases are just some of the diseases that are rife. With medicines severely restricted the need for assistance from MAP and World Medicine is great.
All World Medicine trips are self-funded, with volunteers fundraising for their own flights, food, and accommodation. Jo is currently trying to raise £1000 and is donating £5 from every full-priced acupuncture treatment she gives in March and April. Individual donations are also welcome. Any surplus funds will be given to local community initiatives in the West Bank.
