Children respond extremely well to acupuncture’s energetic approach and
parents are reassured by its gentle and strengthening treatments. It has
been used successfully for thousands of years in China and now the benefits
of its holistic approach are being recognised in the West.
Children generally have strong energy and although they can get unwell
quickly, they can also recover rapidly, given the right support. The aim of
acupuncture treatment is to restore the child’s own vitality, strengthen
their constitution and help their natural systems develop. The restoration of
health in childhood creates a good foundation for a healthy and happy life.
It can reduce the risk of recurrent problems that could develop into more
chronic lifelong conditions.
The technique for treating children is very gentle. Typically 4-6 fine, sterile
needles are used and your child can sit on your lap throughout the treatment.
Does it hurt? Insertion of the needle can cause a slight prick but this is much
less than the pain of an injection. I will gently manipulate the needle to find
the ‘Qi’. This may feel tingly or a little sore and sometimes there may be a
few tears, but the sensation quickly goes and your child will soon be smiling
again. The whole process will only take a matter of minutes. Sometimes I will
also use cupping, massage or moxa (a natural, safe Chinese herb which warms
and nourishes) - children usually love this!
A child who is unwell is a concern for any parent, and it can be emotionally
and physically tiring. You may have concerns over the repeated or long-term
use of conventional medicines such as inhalers, antibiotics or corticosteroids.
Acupuncture offers a real alternative that can relieve symptoms in the
short-term and treat the cause of the condition to give long-term benefit.
We can treat digestive complaints, coughs and colds, glue ear, insomnia,
nocturnal enuresis, hyperactivity and much more. |
